Breath through your nose and breath out through your mouth, also make sure you drink water throughout exercise.

Shortness of breath during exercise can be due to any number of reasons, most commonly, poor conditioning (doesn’t sound like you). Other reasons may include exercise-induced asthma, cardiac arrhythmias, structural heart disease, and pulmonary hypertension. Exercise-induced asthma can be difficult to diagnose, even with a PFT (results may be normal). A bronchoprovocation test may be necessary. Arrhythmias, structural heart disease, and pulmonary hypertension may require a visit to a cardiologist.
